Matthew Chan, Registered Physiotherapist in North York and Markham

Your partner in recovery.

Helping people move better and feel stronger is more than just a job to me — it's something I genuinely care about. Healing goes beyond treating symptoms. It's about understanding the person behind the pain, uncovering the root cause, and building a treatment plan that supports your unique goals.

Physiotherapy is both science and problem-solving. I don't just follow a checklist — I take time to assess what's truly going on beneath the surface. Whether you're recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or working toward better performance, I approach each case with curiosity, clarity, and care.

As a former national-level competitive swimmer, I understand firsthand the physical and mental toll injuries can take. That lived experience, combined with my clinical training at McMaster, allows me to support patients at all stages — from athletes to active adults to those rebuilding their movement and confidence.

My goal is to make physiotherapy approachable, empowering, and genuinely effective — so you can get back to doing what you love, pain-free and stronger than before.

Common questions.

No. Physiotherapists are primary health care providers in Ontario — you can book directly without a referral. However, some extended health insurance plans require a physician's referral to reimburse your claim, so it's worth checking your policy.
It depends on your condition, goals, personal circumstances, and how your body responds. Acute injuries often resolve in 4–8 sessions. Chronic conditions or post-surgical rehab may take longer. I'll give you a realistic estimate after your initial assessment. I'm also happy to work around limited insurance coverage or budget — we can prioritize the most high-impact treatments and home exercises to get you the best outcomes within your constraints.
Most extended health benefit plans cover physiotherapy. We offer direct billing to 50+ plans including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Blue Cross, and many more through TELUS Health eClaims. Bring your benefits card and we'll handle the paperwork.
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the area being treated. Shorts for knee/hip issues, a tank top or sports bra for shoulder/upper back, etc. You don't need to bring anything special — just yourself.
Your first session is a full assessment: I'll take your history, understand your goals, and conduct a detailed physical examination. From there, we'll discuss findings, I'll explain what's happening in plain terms (often with visual aids), and we'll begin treatment — all in the same appointment.
Yes. I'm fluent in English, Cantonese (廣東話), and Mandarin (普通話). You're welcome to communicate in whichever language you're most comfortable with — this is especially helpful for explaining complex symptoms or understanding your treatment plan.
Home visits are available across the Greater Toronto Area, subject to location and available time slots. Submit a request form with your address and preferred times, and I'll confirm availability within 2–3 business days.
Both clinic locations have parking and accessible parking available. If you have mobility concerns or require accommodations, please let us know when booking and we'll ensure a smooth arrival.
